Media Ownership Research Task - Ms Wigley

LO: To investigate the ownership of media institutions and consider the role of public service
broadcasting in an increasingly commercial & globalised media environment.

Media texts are profit motivated. Consider this in the light of TV news. What issues does this raise?

Media texts being profit motivated could raise many issues. Media companies may only present such media which will give the company a profit. To make a profit in media, the media companies need to hit their media to their target audience, because only then will the media companies make a profit. As a result of this media companies may not include media which they think will not attract and interest their target audiences. However as a result this media companies may be misleading and therefore mislead their audience. Also today there is a lot of competition between media companies and to be successful media companies need to be making a profit.

However as many companies are trying to take over other media companies this could result as a downfall for the media audiences because if one person or a company owns a lot of media they may be biased and put their views and opinions across instead of considering a wide range of audience. TV news shows what will target and interest their audiences. However today TV news has competition with newspapers, as TV news has to get a message/information across quickly and easily without the audience to have more work to do then listen and be engaged.
Which media companies do you think could be accused of having too much power and control in our society?

Companies that are owned by the government or by mass media companies will be accused of having too much power and control in our society. Companies owned by the government could be biased and controlative. Also companies owned by the government in media may be used purely for propaganda and informational purposes. Also they would be only targeting a specific audience that is interested in government. Companies that are government or mass owned could have a negative influence in everyday life in society, such as education and work. However companies owned by government and mass media may be misleading and biased as they might be putting only their opinions and views across indirectly.
