Banned Adverts - Ms Wigley

ASA Adjudication on Doro AB

This advert was banned by the ASA on the 13th October 2010.  The TV advert, for Doro mobile phones featured a demonstration of a Doro mobile and stated “Doro mobile phones are stylish, practical and easy to use. With large text, big keys and good clear sound, they make calling easy. Doro mobile phones, brilliantly simple. Only available from Orange, from your local store or online. Find out more at doro.co.uk/easy”.  In the advert the Orange logo was shown and the text stated “Only on Orange”.
However the advert had complaints stating that the advert was misleading, because they understood that Doro mobile phones were widely available and could be used with any sim cards other than Orange. The advert breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1.1 and 5.1.3 (Misleading advertising).
In my opinion this advert should be banned because it is misleading customers who are on orange and would like to buy a Doro mobile phone.

ASA Adjudication on Tesco Personal Finance Ltd

This advert was banned by the ASA on the 13th October 2010. The TV advert, for the Tesco Clubcard credit card, presented a variety of items for purchase in different situations, such as a fish, a hat, and a bicycle. In each situation a circle of text appeared that stated how many Tesco Clubcard points would be accrued from the purchase. On-screen text at the end of the ad stated "Tesco purchase includes double points ... 1 point per £4 spent ...."

However the advert had complaints stating that the advert was misleading and was exaggerated the number of points that would have been collected when purchasing the items featured in the advert. The ASA investigated the ad under CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1.1 and 5.1.3 (Misleading advertising) and 5.2.2 (Claims) but did not find it in breach.

In my opinion this advert should be banned because it is the points are being exaggerated which is misleading to the customers especially in the credit crunch.

ASA Adjudication on DSG Retail Ltd

This advert was banned by the ASA on the 6th October 2010. The TV advert, for PC World showed various shots of a laptop computer. A voice-over stated "I need a laptop that can keep up with me so I bought this HP from PC World". Speeded-up footage was shown of the laptop being used to do a variety of tasks while the voice-over stated "Its Intel Core i3 processor means that all the things I usually do, I can do 35 per cent faster." Superimposed text at the bottom of the screen stated "Compared to the Intel Pentium processor".

However the advert was had complaints that challenged whether the claim "Its Intel Core i3 processor means that all the things I usually do, I can do 35 per cent faster" was misleading and could be substantiated. The ad breached CAP (Broadcast) TV Advertising Standards Code rules 5.1.1 and 5.1.3 (Misleading advertising), 5.2.1 (Evidence) and 5.2.2 (Implications).

In my opinion this advert should be banned because it is misleading to customer who might have believed the advert.

Media Awards Reviews – Mr Bush

Out of the many trailers and openings to films which were shown at the Media Awards one trailer and one opening stood out from the rest for me.

“The Essex Fairytale”
The Essex Fairytale was one of the openings of a film which stood out for me on the night. The sound in the opening was diegetic sound as throughout there was a voice over narrator. By doing using a voice over narrator as well as the actors talking it explained the story to us the audience which kept the audience engaged with the film opening. Right at the beginning the protagonist was being questioned which shows that the narrative pattern was in an non-liner pattern as it was a flashback of what had been happening to lead up to the protagonist being questioned. The genre of the film was gangster. The audience who would consume this film would be secondary audience as it would not be suitable for anyone under the legal age of 18 as drugs and violence is shown in the film. The use of drugs, violence and the protagonist being in a gang reflects negative society. The Essex Fairytale was edited throughout the film as the diegetic sound was used as well as when the scenes were moving on the use of the “cupboard door” was a symbol to convey to the audience. Also the lighting throughout the film was dark which was done on purpose to show the darkness around the protagonist and to relate back to the film’s genre gangster. The use of the zoom shot showed the protagonist and his friend beating up a guy showed their emotions and then quickly moved on to a black screen, also the use of zooming out showed the environment which the protagonist is living in which shows Essex . The technique of mise-en-scéne was used throughout the film. The beginning when the protagonist was being questioned his facial expressions showed the audience that he was care free and didn’t really care that he was in trouble which showed his attitude. Also the use of props by using the gun in the protagonist’s daughter’s hands detonates to the audience that the protagonist is being careless and it is bad for the child because the gun could go of, however the gun in the daughter’s hands connotes that the child is growing up in a negative society.  Also the use of the gun sets out action codes to the audience as the gun signifies the importance in the developing of the narrative.

“One Step 2 Far”
One Step 2 Far was a trailer which also stood out of me on the night. The sound throughout was non-diegetic sound. The genre of this movie was horror/thriller. In this trailer it uses Tzvertan Todorov’s narrative theory as it has an equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium. The audience who would consume this film would be secondary audience as the film is a horror and not suitable for anyone under the age of 15. The technique of the mise-en-scéne is used in this film. The image of the three friends burning is a action code as well as a enigma code as it in the story we know it is important as it develops the narrative. The picture burning is an enigma code as it holds the audiences interest. One of the camera work techniques used in this film is zoom because then we can see the facial expressions of the characters which engages the reader and keeps the suspense going as the film is a horror/thriller. Another camera work technique used is zooming out and long shorts to show the setting of the scene and to show the characters running from what is after them and to show the stress of what is happening to them holds the audiences interest. Also the use of the black background with the red blood text stands out on the screen by using adjectives such as “Your Next” engages the audience into the trailer even more. The film trailer leaves the audience hanging of their chairs as the film trailer ends with a cliffhanger, as they want to know what happens to the three girls which are burning in the picture which is kept showing throughout the film which creates even more suspense leaving the audience wanting more which shows that the message that the director has wants to be conveyed to the audience has been.

Movie Analysis - The Dark Knight - Mr Bush

The Dark Knight is a 2008 action – thriller superhero film. It is a sequel to the film “Batman Begins”.

The film follows Bruce Wayne the Batman who is the central protagonist and also is the hero in the film. The movie uses a narrative pattern by using the liner pattern narrative and also uses Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative theory by dividing the film into three parts the equilibrium, the disequilibrium and the new equilibrium.

With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon the helper in the movie and District Attorney Harvey Dent, the false hero who dates Rachel Dawes, the princess, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham city for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective however they soon find themselves preying to a rising criminal mastermind in which the equilibrium does not last long in the movie. The movies plot begins with a disequilibrium when the joker, the villain accomplices robbing a bank in broad daylight. This sparks of chain of events involving conflicts which the joker creates in the movie.

When the Joker turns up at an organized fundraiser party by Bruce Wayne for Harvey Dent he threatens Bruce Wayne and the guests to revel who the Batman is. The Joker throws Rachel of the balcony because he suspects Batman will come to save her, this send out enigma codes to the audience and keeps us engaged by the fact what will the Joker do as he has a deal with a Chinese mafia accountant, to kill the Batman who is the protagonist . As the Joker harms others in the film and close ones to the Batman the film takes a twist which holds the audience’s interest.

However when Harvey Dent goes missing along side Rachel the Joker reveals that they have been taken to separate buildings on opposite sides of town which will explode at the same time as he has sent up bombs. The director uses action codes at this part of the movie as we as the audience know this will be an important event which creates a lot of action and suspense in the movie. Batman as the hero in the movie goes after Rachel Dawes who he loves whilst Gordon and the police go for Harvey Dent. At the same time the Joker escapes custody with Lau using a smuggled bomb. Batman instead finds Harvey Dent and rescues him though he pressures him to go for Rachel. The buildings explode and because of this Rachel Dawes dies while half of Harvey's face is burnt in his escape, leaving him traumatized and vengeful. We as the audience now see Harvey Dent’s downfall as the false hero. The director again uses enigma codes to hold the audience’s interest as we wait for the outcome to be shown.

The Joker goes on to visit Harvey Dent and convinces him to go to get revenge on those who helped play a part in Rachel Dawes death. The Joker goes onto escape the hospital by blowing it up, however in which Harvey Dent has already fled to get his revenge.

The film comes to a new equilibrium as the Joker is captured but not before revealing what he has done to Harvey Dent leads the movie into a climax. At the building of where Rachel Dawes died, Batman finds Harvey Dent holding the officer Gordon and his family at a gunpoint. However the Batman then goes on to tackle Harvey Dent which leads to his fall and kills him. Knowing that the citizens of Gotham will lose hope and all morale if Harvey Dent’s rampage becomes public news, Gordon is convinced by Batman to hold Batman publicly responsible for the murders. The police swarm the building, and the hunt for Batman begins as Gordon and his son watch. Gordon later delivers the eulogy at Harvey's funeral and smashes the Bat-Signal.
