The Dark Knight is a 2008 action – thriller superhero film. It is a sequel to the film “Batman Begins”.
The film follows Bruce Wayne the Batman who is the central protagonist and also is the hero in the film. The movie uses a narrative pattern by using the liner pattern narrative and also uses Tzvetan Todorov’s narrative theory by dividing the film into three parts the equilibrium, the disequilibrium and the new equilibrium.
With the help of Lieutenant Jim Gordon the helper in the movie and District Attorney Harvey Dent, the false hero who dates Rachel Dawes, the princess, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham city for good. The triumvirate proves to be effective however they soon find themselves preying to a rising criminal mastermind in which the equilibrium does not last long in the movie. The movies plot begins with a disequilibrium when the joker, the villain accomplices robbing a bank in broad daylight. This sparks of chain of events involving conflicts which the joker creates in the movie.
When the Joker turns up at an organized fundraiser party by Bruce Wayne for Harvey Dent he threatens Bruce Wayne and the guests to revel who the Batman is. The Joker throws Rachel of the balcony because he suspects Batman will come to save her, this send out enigma codes to the audience and keeps us engaged by the fact what will the Joker do as he has a deal with a Chinese mafia accountant, to kill the Batman who is the protagonist . As the Joker harms others in the film and close ones to the Batman the film takes a twist which holds the audience’s interest.
However when Harvey Dent goes missing along side Rachel the Joker reveals that they have been taken to separate buildings on opposite sides of town which will explode at the same time as he has sent up bombs. The director uses action codes at this part of the movie as we as the audience know this will be an important event which creates a lot of action and suspense in the movie. Batman as the hero in the movie goes after Rachel Dawes who he loves whilst Gordon and the police go for Harvey Dent. At the same time the Joker escapes custody with Lau using a smuggled bomb. Batman instead finds Harvey Dent and rescues him though he pressures him to go for Rachel. The buildings explode and because of this Rachel Dawes dies while half of Harvey 's face is burnt in his escape, leaving him traumatized and vengeful. We as the audience now see Harvey Dent’s downfall as the false hero. The director again uses enigma codes to hold the audience’s interest as we wait for the outcome to be shown.
The Joker goes on to visit Harvey Dent and convinces him to go to get revenge on those who helped play a part in Rachel Dawes death. The Joker goes onto escape the hospital by blowing it up, however in which Harvey Dent has already fled to get his revenge.
The film comes to a new equilibrium as the Joker is captured but not before revealing what he has done to Harvey Dent leads the movie into a climax. At the building of where Rachel Dawes died, Batman finds Harvey Dent holding the officer Gordon and his family at a gunpoint. However the Batman then goes on to tackle Harvey Dent which leads to his fall and kills him. Knowing that the citizens of Gotham will lose hope and all morale if Harvey Dent’s rampage becomes public news, Gordon is convinced by Batman to hold Batman publicly responsible for the murders. The police swarm the building, and the hunt for Batman begins as Gordon and his son watch. Gordon later delivers the eulogy at Harvey 's funeral and smashes the Bat-Signal.
