Media Advert Analysis - Mr Bush

This advert is for the perfume by Dior called ‘Midnight Poison’ for women. The target audience that it is aimed is females are ranging from the ages of 15-30. The teenage audience is drawn in by the adverts individuality, confident and beautiful female model who is also energetic. However the older end of the target audience can relate to the advert being related to confidence and the desire to be independent in this modern age of time.

The colours used in the advert are quite strong and stand out on the page. Dark amber colours are being used in the advert. The use of such colours may connote the darkness of the perfume which relates to the name of the perfume “Midnight Poison”. However one can denote that the colours are associated with night because of the name of the perfume “Midnight”. At the bottom of the advert in small text in the colour white it says “A new Cinderella is born” which connotes that at the strike of midnight a new Cinderella is born with the perfume.  The use of the colours white show purity but also the colours white and dark blue go together because of the lighting and stand out on the page on purpose so therefore the target audience can see the main information they need to know straight away as they can see the manufacturer is Dior as most target audience’s and potential buyers would look at the name of the brand.

The image is framed, as there is not much going on in the background. This connotes that the model and the perfume are the centre of attention, as they attract the target audience and draw attention of the main subject which is the perfume “Midnight Poison”. This is cleverly done by editing the image and making the scene look dark and mysterious. The position of her hand shows confidence and draws the image into a frame as her hands are positioned as claws as if you are in her grasp because she draws you into the advert. Also the models eyes draw you into the image because they are open, blue coloured and show confidence and independent which every woman desires to have.

The main compositions in the picture stand out. The model takes up most of the page as she is advertising the perfume and is the main center of attention which attracts the perfume which is placed right underneath her in the image for the advertisement.

The type of shot is a close up shot taken from the top like a bird eye view. This type of shot has a massive affect on the target audience because they can see the emotion in the models eyes as the models pose in the image is her sitting down which makes it easier for the audience to look into her eyes, which connotes darkness and a different mysterious Cinderella.

The subject matter of this particular advert is advertising of a Dior “Midnight Poison” perfume. The subject matter is the perfume however it is also the model because she is promoting the perfume to the target audience. The model targets the specific audience as they can think if they buy the perfume they can be different too “A new Cinderella is born” as you emphasis on the word new, it could have two meanings that you could be a new person or be like Cinderella and feel special like the model conveys to the potential target audience.

The setting of the advert is a dark place and possibly could be outdoors, however it is a dark place to give a strong confident look to the audience to draw them in, as the model’s face is quite pale. The model in the advert is sitting down and is looking up to show she is confident naturally with the help of the perfume.

The fairly tale like dress of the model is to show she is an individual, and is different from others as she stands out which is conveyed as she does stand out on the page. This appeals to an audience who has aspirations to be a successful independent, women which can relate to teenagers. This also links to the tagline located at the bottom of the advert ‘A new Cinderella is born.’ Suggesting like Cinderella the reader can be ‘re-born’ from being quite dull to amazing and beautiful, which with all your dreams will be achievable with the power of being independent and confident which the you shall gain with purchasing the perfume from Dior.

  2. This analysis is good as you managed to explain what target audience Dior is aimed at, type of camera shot and many more other key media words and you have managed to explain what the affect is of using a specific camera shot, composition etc.

  3. Rameeeta :P ..
www: everything! you dicussed the whole contents of the advertisement and linked it back to the audience well.

ebi: erm this is hard .. well you could show her being an anti-Cinderella .. as cinderella is stereotypically a kind, sweet looking girl whereas this model looks like she kinda wants to stab people in the heart. : \

  4. Ramitaa! :) Wow, this is really good!

You have a lot of detail in each aspect of advert, colours, words, framing and setting. Good use of terminology thoughout. Perhaps for improvement, you could vary the words and use a variety. But, overall, its excellent! :D

  5. Wow Ramita fantastic analysis i really enjoyed reading it, i think when you were talking about the colours you could have given more interpretations for instance. 'A new cinderella is born' this could connote that the perfume is so powerful it can almost consume a persons personality, in addition if you notice the models face is the only part which hasn't been 'consumed' by the perfume so maybe you could have played upon that aspect and said, the darkish midnight navy colour consumes everything but the models face which could represent the 'poison' can make you glow; showing a new personality from the coalition of her and the poison. Sorry to go on =D these were just some idea's i got from looking at it. Great piece of work again. :)

As great as it is, i cannot think of an even better if, but if you could of criticised the advert a little bit saying how it could go against there aims and how they could have changed a particular aspect to attract more people. (just a suggestion) (: but well done x
